FAQs
Why create another type of scoring method for Steel Challenge?
Steel Challenge is a great game exactly as it is! The new handicapped scoring system is intended to unify the game by providing a level playing field for all competitors regardless of Division, Class, or Category. This way, everyone has an equal chance to win the “match-within-the-match” at the start, but there is no change to the existing SCSA Classification System or scoring.
The idea is to help address these kinds of competitor sentiments:
- “We always know what the results will be depending on who signed up.”
- “I’m glad I’m not last, but I rarely make it into the top half.”
- “We’re not in the same division, so we can’t compare our performance.”
- “I enjoy competing against other C-Class shooters, but I wish there was a way to compete against everyone in the match.”
- “I know I can track my scores and my Class as I move up, but I’d like a way to track my performance over time with different guns at different matches, and track the direct effects of practice, training, or changing equipment.”
What is a GMTT, and how is it calculated?

Will participating in this league affect my Steel Challenge Classification or rankings?
No, the Steel Challengers League is completely separate and distinct from the SCSA Classification system. There is no cross-over between the two, although the same match scores are fed into both.
Why don’t I see results on this site for all the matches I’ve shot?
The Steel Challengers league is currently limited to selected matches from specific ranges. For now, we’re focused on monthly matches sanctioned by the SCSA and a few bigger matches well-attended by our members. Send an email to Info@SteelChallengers.com if you’d like to propose inclusion of other matches.
Why don’t my best times for certain stages match my SCSA Classification record?
We’ve done our best to gather all the historical match records from April 2022 forward shot by the majority of our members. Send an email to Info@SteelChallengers.com if you have personal best times from matches not included in our database.
Where do I find results by Category such as Junior, Senior, Lady, Military, etc. ?
One key feature of the Steel Challengers League is that everyone competes on a level playing field regardless of Division, Class, or Category. The Categories in Steel Challenge are inconsistent across matches (at the match directors’ discretion). Plus, they’re not reported consistently in the results, and individuals may have multiple Categories apply (e.g. both Junior and Lady). Therefore, we chose not to include them for search and filtering in this League, but of course, they are still available in the Practiscore results.
When I start a new Classification in a new Division, how many matches before I’ll be included in this league?
Your new Division will be included once you have at least one valid classification score for each stage included in the current match. Without that, we can’t calculate your GMTT (Good Match Target Time) for the current match.
How do we prevent competitors from “sandbagging” in this league?
Some competitors will try to game the system no matter what sport they play. This scoring and handicapping system is modeled after the golf WHS (World Handicap System), both of which become a more accurate representation of each competitors’ current ability as more scores are gathered.
How do I join the league?
This league will be closing at the end of the 2024 season. Stay tuned for news on future direction.
